What is Ulcerative Colitis? What is the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis?

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic disease where the colon (aka large intestine) of a person becomes inflamed and develops tiny open sores or ulcers the produce mucous or pus. This leads to discomfort and frequent emptying of the colon.

UC is a result of immune system attacking the food, bacteria and other materials in the intestine as foreign bodies. The immune system White Blood Cells (WBCs) into the intestine lining for repair which in turn causes inflammation and ulceration. UC is different from other diseases like Crohn’s disease, Gout etc. since only the colon is affected in UC. Ulcerative Colitis belongs to a group of diseases called Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The patients of UC may be able to lead normal lives in between flare-ups which can recur after days, months or even years.

Signs and Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis:

1. Loose Bowel Movement
2. Frequent Bowel Movement
3. Diahorrea-like symptoms with abdonimal pain
4. Blood in stool
5. Persistent stomach cramps

Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis:

Ulcertive Colitis can be treated mainly by correcting the immune system so that it stops attacking the colon. But for relief from pain and other symptoms, here are a few things that can be done:

1. Ingesting anti-inflammatory drugs like Gufic Sallaki
2. Avoiding food items or ingredients which bring the flare-ups (spices, fibre etc.)
3. Eating soft food items high in nutrients
4. Surgery

Sallaki Dosage Recommendation for Ulcerative Colitis:

One Sallaki-600 tablet twice a day for 8 weeks (or in intense pain due to UC)
Followed by one Sallaki-400 tablet once a day.

What is Crohn’s Disease? What is the treatment of Crohn’s Disease?

What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic disease (belonging to a group of conditions called IBD – Irritable Bowel Syndrome) caused by the inflammation of any part of the Gastrointestinal Tract (GI tract). Crohn’s disease is different from Ulcerative Colitis because UC is identified as the inflammation of the colon while Crohn’s disease is the inflammation of any part of the Gastrointestinal(GI) tract from mouth to anus.

The GI tract usually contains useful bacteria which help in digestion and assimilation of nutrients. And immune system usually attacks any virus, fungi and other micro organisms which are foreign bodies. Under normal circumstances, the foreign bodies are attacked while the useful bacteria flourish within our digestive system.
But in people with any form of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the useful bacteria are also attacked by the immune system of the body.

The immune system sends blood cells (White Blood Cells WBCs) to the intestines which causes inflammation. If the inflammation does not subside immediately, it takes the form of chronic inflammation, ulceration and thickening of intestinal wall. These together create discomfort and then pain to the patients. Crohn’s disease also runs in families. But it can also occur in individuals for various reasons.

Signs and Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease:

1. Increased Bowel Movement
2. Stomach pain or cramps
3. Rectal bleeding
4. Persistent Diahorrea
5. Constipation
6. Sensation of incomplete evacuation of the bowels (even after defecation)

Treatment of Crohn’s Disease:

1. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic medicines like Sallaki
2. Dietary changes (no spicy or heavy food)
3. Surgery

Sallaki Dosage Recommendation for Crohn’s Disease:

One Sallaki-600 tablet twice a day for 8-12 weeks
Followed by one Sallaki-400 tablet once a day until the inflammation subsides
